Vishu  Kani

Vishu kani is the main event of Vishu.  This means, the first to be seen on vishu. People arrange auspicious articles in ootturali in pooja room, which are  granta [ palm leaves manuscript]  the  holy text, rice, golden ornament , coins, kanikonna [cassia fistula] , kanivellarica [yellow cucumber], coconut, jackfruit, ripe mangoes, betal leaves, areca nut, valkannadi, kasavu mundu [Kerala traditional cloth] etc. Behind the ootturali an idol of Lord Sree Krishna will be kept. Nilavilaku, the Kerala traditional lamp also lightened in front of god. These are arranged on previous night.

On vishu day, the custom is to wake up at dawn and proceeds towards the pooja room with closed eyes and see the Vishu Kani.
